By definition oxidative stress is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in your body. Free radicals are oxygen-containing molecules with an uneven number of electrons.

Oxidative Stress promotes aging and allows the development of a disease. Scientists agree that aging and most deadly diseases are the results of cellular deterioration due to destructive molecules called free radicals. Free radical damage that causes aging is called “oxidative stress” (we all have it) the same process that causes rust. In a sense, aging is your body’s way of rusting from the inside out!

Free radicals are like a ping pong balls. This single oxygen is bouncing all around hitting into our cells and causing an enormous amount of damage. Think of the ping pong balls in a lottery bubble (remember Yolanda Vega haha) well each time they hit cell walls they are causing damage and breakdown things down. In the body they can breakdown cell walls and organs 🥶.

Oxidative stress is something that happens daily. We get it from the food we eat, water, air and even if we do intense exercises. When our body is able to handle and adapt effectively to the oxidative stressors, we are able to get stronger and healthier. However, when the stressors (environmental, cognitive, emotional, physical stressors) become too much for our body to adapt to, we get weaker and sicker.

One particular free radical that does a tremendous amount of damage is called superoxide radical. It is a byproduct of oxygen metabolism aka breathing. This can damage our mitochondria (remember from science class the powerhouse of the cell) and believe me this is something we don’t want to happen. The mitochondria convert food to energy and if there is damage or toxins start to invade, its cellular respiration (breathing) can be impaired – again not something we want!

So, what can we do to help! Many believe consuming antioxidants will be the fix, this is not wrong however with our modern world and HIGH oxidative stress on daily basis this just is not enough. Instead of consuming antioxidants lets get our body to produce the natural powerful antioxidants, Glutathione and Superoxide dismutase (SOD) by biohacking. SOD is an enzyme that facilitates the breakdown of the toxic superoxide radical into either ordinary molecular oxygen (O2) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2).
